POJS - 8500 Victimology (3) An examination of the relationship between victims of crime and the criminal justice system. The topics will include an analysis of the characteristics of crime victims; victim role; intimate versus stranger crime; victim reporting and non-reporting patterns; National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) results; treatment of victims by various segments of the criminal justice system; victim assistance programs; victim compensation and/or restitution; and victim impact statements and their affect on the criminal court. Victim-blaming arguments will be explored, as well as sexual assault, child abuse, and the victimization of the elderly. Equivalent to POJS-850. Prerequisite: take POJS-6100 .
