ANSO - 3500 Music and Society (3)

Analyzes music as a symbolic phenomenon that is a source of cultural (re)production, identity formation, and creation of/challenge to power, hegemony, and social inequality. Utilizes macro- and micro-sociological perspectives to explain the ways musicians, their music, and music-related industries influence individuals and society and vice versa within the historical and cultural contexts of the time periods examined. Instructional Method: Lecture-Discussion, Online. Terms Offered: Fall, Spring, or Summer.
